This paper presents the Continuing Progression Process developed by Education State Secretary of São Paulo (1998) targeting all state schools, not losing the problem of school selection and focusing on the school evaluation. It was done a research about the subject, characterizing what means the Continuing Progression Process based on official documents of Education State Secretary of Sao Paulo and besides that it was done a follow up (2000) of implementation this new proposal inside of a state school of Campinas, São Paulo. In this school, data were collected about its structure and organization and it was done a follow up of four classes, each one of one school year (1º to 4º year of Level 1). It was recorded through daily observations these responsible teachers of chosen students/classes, besides periods of school as a whole: educational jobs in all, parents and teachers meeting, classes board, events; and manage of supporting and recovering of apprenticeship of chosen classes/students. It was also done interviews with the administrators, supervisors and responsible teachers, with a total of 7 education professionals and 124 students. The analysis of data showed the influence of school selection, mainly through informal evaluation, intensifying in the school system (by “brand exclusion” and “postpone elimination”) the school differences and hence the social differences. This report calls attention to alternative ways that the selection and exclusion assume when to break off the formal classic evaluations.
