RESUMO
The production and dissemination movement of indicators to evaluate older peopleâs health has been in process in Brazil, justifying a broad discussion on the issue. The goals of this study were: identifying an indicators group for older people; confirming the availability of that information in Brazilian sources and evaluating the older brazilian well-being, by comparing them with the ones in the United States (USA). Based on the Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics 31 indicators were searched in Brazilian sources: IDB, IBGE, Ipea, scientific publications and journals. Secondary data from the USA and Brazilian ones close to year 2000 were described. The USA have 3.5 older people than Brazil, prevailing white and married ones in both countries. High school and college education are higher in the USA (67%) than in Brazil (10%). Participation in the work force is similar in both countries (27% in Brazil and 23% in the USA); also life expectancy at 65 (17 years in Brazil and 18 in the USA). Death rate by vascular-brain disease and diabetes is higher in Brazil; in the USA by malignant neoplasm. Among Brazilians, 84% refer to health between regular and very good; in the USA 72%. Disabilities reach 21% of older North Americans. Around 20% of Brazilians do not make any daily life activities for health reasons. Brazilian vaccination against influenza is 67%, in the USA 50%. Health expenses for those who earn more are lower in both countries. Older Americans spend less with medication and use more health care. Brazilian indicators not found: memory impairment, social activity and violent crimes. The results reveal an indicators group to follow older people proposed by the USA. Most of that group (90%) was found in Brazil, where older people have less education and work equally than older Americans. Ethnic groups, genders, family arrays, disease and health care ratio are similar in both countries. That research suggests a health indicators group for the follow-up of the peopleâs cohort who ages in the country
