RESUMO

The objective of this research was to evaluate the development of the third molars in the age of 5 and 19 years old. 420 Panoramic x-Rays of 212 males and 208 females were studied. The study aimed at establishing the correlation between the development stages and the ages; verifying the incidence of agenesis; observing the difference of gender; studying the development of the third molar angular position in to the first and second mandibular molar in eruption; evaluating the vertical position of third molars in relation to the occlusal plan; verifying the evolution of eruption or impaction of the third molars; and finally, verifying the difference between the right and left side. The results showed that the cript of the third molar had the beginning of its calcification between the ages of 7 and 9 . The stage of the completed crown happened between the ages of 10 and 13. The development of the root prevailed between the ages of 14 and 17. The complete development of the third molars were after 18 years old. The agenesis was considered after 13 years old. The angle between the mandibular first molar and the third molar decreased as the age increased acquiring a more distal position. The upright of the third molar was more rapid in females and more uniform in males. The third molar vertical position in relation to the occlusal plan was statistically insignificant due to its variability. The more upright position ofthe third molars was more rapid on the left than on the right side
