RESUMO

The present study results from the observed fact that human populations have managed to survive in complex environments, degraded milieux in terms of socioenvironmental development, which entails the deterioration of life quality. The study sets out to analyze, from an anthropological framework, the socioenvironmental problems in two spontaneous urban settlements in the city of Recife- Brazil. The two settlements appeared as a consequence of successive landfilling of the mangroove swamp areas. The raw material for the research were the interrelations among the local populations and the existing surrounding environmental complexity. The foci of attention were the peopleÂs conceptions about their life conditions. The data were gathered through the observation of their activities of daily living and direct questioning. The aim was to reveal their understanding of life quality and environment. The research also highlighted the populationÂs perceptions of intervention projects conducted in the areas, whose aims were to enable environmental self-sustainability. These projects carried out either by governmental or non-governmental agencies pursued, through investments in the forms of economic financing or advisory support, the development of economic, cultural end ecological sustainable practices
