RESUMO

Organizations pertaining to the society of knowledge are characterized by, among other factors, the utilization of knowledge in their processes. Thus, for this valuable ingredient to be developed in the organization, learning organization becomes strategic in character. Within the dimensions of learning, there is emphasis of the individual-cognitivist perspective, which tends to occur without connection to the context, thereby becoming deficient and partial. Also emphasized is the sociopractice perspective, which considers contextual aspects and contributes to a balanced form of creating and disseminating knowledge integrally. This last dimension is composed of, above all, by two modalities: mentoring and the communities of practice. Given this conjuncture, the objective of this research is to analyze how learning organization occurs in communication organizations with intensive in knowledge. So, a case study was developed in Engenho Novo, a Salvador-Bahia based communication company. The empirical research was fundamentally qualitative, as it was based on the analysis of documents and interviews (eight in all) and personal observations. One of the results was to identify that Engenho Novo can be characterized as a knowledge intensive firm, even though it presents some fragmentation in its internal network and some degree of power concentration. In addition, the socio-practice perspective becomes prominent in the company studied, having prominent utilization of mentoring in order to create and disseminate knowledge. Another most relevant point of this work is the non observance of the communities of practice in the organization studied. This result confronts literature, which considers as a given the appearance of communities of practice in the organizational context, independent of cultural, professional and other aspects.
