RESUMO

During the course of lifetime, an individual passes through different periods in the process of constructing, transforming and developing his identity. Using the criteria of age, youthfulness is seen as a universal condition, a stage of human development that is found in every society and historical epoch; in other words, youthfulness is seen as a temporal social condition about which a series of questions are raised. Within the multitude of concepts, images and contexts on which the contemporary discussion of youth is based, this dissertation has as its principal objective an analysis of the way in which the loss of liberty interferes in the world vision of the young men confined in the âreeducation centerâ Lar do Garoto in the state of ParaÃba, Brazil. The analysis is based on an ethnography of the institution, Lar do Garoto. Data were collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews of the inmates. The study shows that coming from a marginalized context and a so-called âculture of violenceâ, these young men find themselves deprived of that which they consider to be essential to fully experience their youth: their liberty. In this way, the youth experienced by these young men is an artificial one. They claim that on the one hand based on their age, they are young men, while on the other hand, the disciplinary rules imposed by the institution take away their liberty and autonomy and thereby the possibility of living fully their youth
