RESUMO

The purpose of this study is estimating the cost function of the Electricity Distribution Sector in Brazil, having the investigation about the existence of scale economic as its main focus. Besides that, it discusses which variables should be considered in this kind of study within the Brazilian framework. In order to estimate a Translog function a simultaneous equation Model based on the Zellners technique (1962) is used. Results show that the existence of scale economic in this sector depends on the energy consumption expansion, moreover, it depends on the territorial dispersion of the customers and customer profile associated to this expansion. Finally, the cost in the distribution sector was found to be strongly related with being the enterprise public or private, service quality, business diversification and regional disparities.
