RESUMO

The present study is aimed at gathering and supplying information for the future preparation of pronunciation teaching materials in EFL. For this purpose, the most frequent words in spoken English and their main collocations were identified, and the presence of these words in the teaching material studied in this research project was checked. The research was based on Corpus Linguistics (Biber, 1998, 1995; Sinclair, 1991; Sanchez, 1995; Kennedy, 1998; Stubbs, 2001; Hunston, 2002; Berber Sardinha, 2000, 2004), on Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1985; Martin, 1996; Eggins, 1994), and on the teaching of English language pronunciation (Baptista, 1992). The research methodology involved the analysis of electronic corpora, and the analysis of the teaching material was based on the study carried out by Piccin (2003). This dissertation raises relevant issues in the field of English pronunciation teaching. It points out what vowel phonemes should be taught and proposes the theoretical claim that the teaching of such language aspects should not happen in isolation, since pronunciation is one of the several elements that help English language learners become fluent. The results obtained in this study show that there is a large gap between what should be taught in the classroom (spoken language) and what is presented by the teaching material (idealized language). With this research project, I intend to offer an original contribution to the fields of Corpus Linguistics and English Pronunciation Teaching
