RESUMO

This thesis is a study of the presence of Peter Pan, by James Barrie, in the texts for children by Monteiro Lobato. The process of appropriation and adaptation by Monteiro Lobato of James B arrie s character consists, first, of an adaptation (Peter Pan, 1930), in which Dona Benta tells the story of the foreign character to her grandchildren. Second, there are other stories by Lobato in which James Barrie s character takes parto Examples are Memorias de Emilia (1936)and O Picapau Amarelo (1939). In the former, Peter Pan is a guest at Sitio do Picapau Amarelo, and in the latter, he decides to move to Sitio together with the other foreign characters. The thesis discusses the presence of a character that belongs to British literature in Lobato s work. The goal of this discussion is to show how the author operates the insertion of this character in his texts. A parallel is also drawn between Lobato s works for children and the writer s plans of creating Brazilian literature for children
