RESUMO

Introduction: The pandemic of Human Immunodeficiency Virus worldwide represents one of the most serious problems of public health, among all the others already faced by the humanity. According to The World Health Organization, in 2007 there were 33 million people living with HIV, around 500 thousand found in Brazil. To prevent HIV vertical transmission of infected mothers to their children, it has been developed the Expectant Mother Protection Program (Programa de Proteção à Gestante) of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. Objectives: Analyze public investments regarding HIV vertical transmission prevention in Mato Grosso do Sul, between January 2004 and December 2007. Methods: Mixed, analytic and descriptive epidemiological study, transversal typed, using secondary data. Results: During the study period 153,857 pregnant women were screened (94% coverage in respect to live born), in that 301 were HIV positive serotype, which comes to 0.20% prevalence. Among the screened pregnant women by the Program there wasnt vertical transmission; and among the cases not screened vertical transmission was estimated in 16%, and 1.22% for Mato Grosso do Sul. Considering 73.5 years old life hope at birth, we came to a year cost-effectiveness (direct cost with diagnostics and prophylaxis) estimate of R$ 325.93 for each case avoided per year old. Comparing such figure with the cost by each infected child under treatment per year is R$ 8,092.71 which we could estimate that the prevention cost per year represents 4.02% of the cost of the treatment per year at the same period. Conclusion: The Expectant Mother Protection Program, considering 153,857 pregnant women screened sample (94% of coverage regarding the live born), could allow us to build precise indicators of prevalence, vertical transmission rates, as well cost-effectiveness evaluation of the prevention measures adopted.
