RESUMO

The purpose of the present thesis is to comprehend how the relationship between children of an Infant Education class at a Municipal School, located in an urban area downtown Rio de Janeiro City, and the cultural expressions and manifestations around the school occurs. Moved by an ethnographic inspiration, the researcher focused a group of children between 4 and 5 years old, whose activities have been accompanied daily. The contexts wherein these children live have changed drastically in the last years, while social and cultural factors affected the way of living and the relations between people and the world around them. A new approach on experience leads us to believe that the act of learning, today, occurs not only inside the classroom, framed by the roles played by the formal school characters, but outside too, from the experiences faced by the students. The city itself, if taken as a field of research and experimentation for new subjectivities for the children and youngsters, allows us to investigate how these actors - in the present thesis, the children - interact and live together, from different models of social insertion. The theoretic fundament was based on the presumptions of the Infancy Sociology searching for the children`s notions of culture, from a point of view that considers childhood as a social construction; children are active actors in the building up of the society where they live. The field-work and the ethnographic reports on the field-book call the attention of the readers to the fact that each child is a being that participates in the construction of significant actions shared by the collectivity, as well as in the organization as a social group. These reports also indicate the socialization processes performed by the children themselves, when they try to manage the heterogeneity of their roles, identities and social positions.
