RESUMO

The industrialization of fine chemical compounds requires a 10t of efforts in their manufacture, especial1y in the purification stage because of the rigorous especifications of these chemical products. The conventional distillation, however, in many cases, can not be utilized, because of the thennal instability of the invo1ved compounds. Since, they are heat sensitive products such as vitamines A, E, K, and many others pharmaceutical intennediaries, as for examp1e ranitidine, several cosmetics, vegetal oi1s, etc. Mo1ecular distillation, so, appears as an important separation process that utilizes high vacuum and 10w temperatures. General1y, the mo1ecular distillation apparatuses have multipurpose functions. Also for this, it becomes important the rigorous modeling and simulation of such distillators, to estabilish operating conditions, improve yie1d and purity of the final product, and to establish flexibility index. The objective of this work, than, is the deve1opment of the mo1ecular distillation tecnique for compounds re1ated to fine chemicals, as the obtention of carotenoids from palm oil and production of 1anolin alcoho1s. Therefore, the following itens were studied: deve1opment of mode1ing and simulation of mo1ecular distillators operating in cascade and in reflux; deve1opment of a metodo1ogy for scaling-up of mo1ecular distillators; validation of the modeling with the system DBF /DBS; experimental work with the mo1ecular distillation process; instalation of the centrifugal and falling film distillators; deve1opment of an experimental work methodo1ogy using both distillators; recovery of carotenoids from palm oil and purification of 1anolin alcoho1s from woo1 greases. It can be verified, finally, this techno1ogy is powerful for obtaining and for concentrating high added value products
