RESUMO

In the current days, great importance is being given to products that come from natural sources, belonging to the class of products of fine chemistry, which are products of high added value and obtained with high technology. These products are vitamins, substances for the production of cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, coloring products, among others. Quite often, most of these products are molecules of high molecular weight or thermally sensitive, hindering the separation or purification through traditional methods, most of the time a conventional distillation, where they are subjected to high temperatures, wich decompose these materials. An alternative to succeed in the separation or purification of such products is the use of molecular distillation, wich is a peculiar case of evaporation: it operates under low pressure values and, therefore, at relatively low temperatures, minimizing the thermal decomposition. However, it is necessary to have large comprehension of molecular distillation to operate it, since small variations in the process conditions may result in great alterations in the characteristics of the product streams. There are basically two types of molecular distillation apparatuses: falling film and centrifug al. The rigorous modeling and simulation of such devices is very important to establish the availability or not of a process and its operating conditions, to improve the yield and purity of the final product and to establish the flexibility index of the process. ...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
