RESUMO

Although some studies had already investigated the interference of nominal realism in reading abilities, only few researches had looked for a better understanding about other possible correlations. Moreover, those researches are, in general, carried with children. Aiming to analyze other possibilities, this study has as its goal, measure the relation of linguistic awareness and nominal realism between reading, writing and mathematics activities. The sample was composed by 54 students; 39 were children of the first, second and fourth grades and 15 were adults of the first stage of the first cycle of adult and young education. The sample was submitted to reading and writing activities of words and pseudo words, vocabulary WISC subtest, nominal realism task and mathematics task. The results had been analyzed through correlations, homogeneity tests, and logistic regressions. The data had evidenced that the nominal realism presents correlation to the following variables: reading (r = 0,593 and p <0,01), writing (r = 0,702 and p <0,01) and mathematics (r = 0,670 and p <0,01). They confirmed, then, the results of previous studies that the understanding of the arbitrariness between significant and meanings is associated to a better performance of reading and the evolution of the writing hypotheses. An important aspect discovered is that there is a relation between the mathematics task and the nominal realism. The regressions test had evidenced that the metalinguistic awareness predicts the variable related to the performance in the WISC subtest, mathematic activity and pseudo words dictation. It is concluded, therefore, the important contribution of linguistic abilities, as well as, logical-mathematical abilities to overcome nominal realism.
