RESUMO

The Island of Porto Belo, in front of the city of Porto Belo had, through a project of public use, estimate its carrying capacity and was pioneering adopting a tourist model based in the principles of sustentability. Implemented in 1996, it has today a set of attractives and services related to the beach tourism, with a cultural and gastronomic approach. For the beach areas it was used a methodological proposal (Lozatto-Giottard, 1992) that considers density standards and its length. For the constructed areas, the capacity of attendance of the services was determined. After this, new attractives had modified its carrying capacity. Certain problematic moments related to the distribution of the visitors in the attractives had been observed. Agglomerations at the beach and little movement in other spaces. Was questioned what factors conditioned these situations, when and how, they operated in the dynamics of the occupation. The general objective of this work was to consider the evaluation of a method of analysis of the tourist carrying capacity . And determine the available areas for the visitation and the demand, during the period of the summering. As well as, to monitor the dynamics of the occupation of the beach areas and the effect of the tide on the available area; beyond verifying the visitors perception of the landscape and to analyze the carrying capacity under the approach of the process of the management. Were used techniques of measures, countings, monitoring and interviews, for the data-collecting. Initially, the elements of occupation and its characteristics had been determined. The examination of the demand, the monitoring of the areas and the tide, and the application of the questionnaire, had been carried, concomitantly during the summering. Finally, the analysis submitted the results to criterias relatives to the carrying capacity of the spaces. It was verified that the space of the beach is strong affected by the tide and that the constructed spaces are strategical at the moments of population peak. The daily averages of visitors had been 821 and the horary distribution, presented an average of 450 visitors in the population peaks. The occurrence of holidays, visits of the cruises ships and ends of the week, with good time, had been the factors related with the increase of the intensity of the visitation. The peaks of the demand of the track and of ecomuseu it become related with the visit of cruise ships and with the occurrence of the high tide. The monitoring demonstrated that the beaches areas can be grouped in 4 different groups, they vary with the intensity of occupation and its condition as facilitator of movement between then. About the perception of impacts of tourist activity, the visitors had pointed questions related to the garbage and the excess of people. The analysis of the capacity supplied different scenarios related to carrying capacity, to the levels of the tide and to different situations of possible densities. The analysis method was considered valid, therefore it pointed the space factors, the demand and the dynamics of occupation, responsibles for the observed problems, and supplied the management whit important subsidies
