RESUMO

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the principal human pathogens that colonize individuals in general in the population. With objective to determine the prevalence and risk factors for colonization by S. aureus in health staff, as well as check the profile of sensitivity of strains to found, a study was conducted on 202 health professionals, the intensive care units, surgical and clinical nephrology/dialysis service, the Clinical Hospital- PE, in the period March to July 2007. Biological samples of hands and nasal cavity were sowed in agar sheep blood. Subsequent, suspicious colonies of they be S. aureus they were identified being by Gram staining, by catalase and by free coagulase tests. They were also accomplished, inoculated in agar salted manitol to 7,5% and DNAse. The susceptibility the mupirocin was determined by the technique of disk diffusion in Mueller-Hinton agar (Kirby Bauer) using disks with concentration of 5μg of the substance (Oxoid BrazilÂ). In relation to methicillin and vancomycin the determination of the sensibility was accomplished by the method of minimum inhibitory concentration (E-test - Probac of BrazilÂ). They were identified 52 professionals as carriage of S. aureus (25,7%). of those, 3,5% presented exclusive colonization in the hands, 18,7% exclusive colonization in the nasal cavity and 3,5% of the individuals colonization in both anatomical structures. The risk factors associated with colonization for S. aureus, among health staff were: age group, professional category, frequency and amount of equipments of individual protection, used. All the strains of S. aureus found were sensitive the mupirocin and vancomycin, and three were only identified as methicillin-resistant
