RESUMO

This paper is an attempt to interrogate the study of Sign Language (and of the Translation from/to Sign Language) wi thin the province of Linguistics. The basic contention is that the majority of the theoretical models in vogue are inadequate in view of the fact that they were developed from the study of spoken languages. This line of reasoning is sustained on the basis of a detailed examination of two assessment programs Translators from/to Sign Language. (IAI and RID). It is further argued that the study of manifestation of language in three dimensions, which constitutes Sign Language, is an undertaking which demands a perception of language different from that employed in Linguistics proper. It is suggested therefore that the study of Sign Language (as well as the study of the Translation from/to Sign Language) would gain a lot by adopting a performative approach
