RESUMO

This essay delineates the profile of the poor population in comparison with the not-poor population of the Metropolitan Region of Salvador. Some statistical comparisons were made using diverse personal characteristics of the two populations in order to trace a profile of these two groups. Moreover, an econometrical analysis was carried out, based on a logit model. The objective was to verify which characteristics had a bigger influence on the probability of the people to be poor or not. The results indicate that there are certain characteristics associated to a higher probability of a person belonging to a poor family, for example being black, having a low education level and the presence of children in the family.
