RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the auditory system and knowledge about the prevention of Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in dentists (Ds) and assistants in oral health (AOH). Method: The study included fifty-one individuals of both sexes between 18 and 48 years old, who worked in the dental office, corresponding to a sample of 36 Ds and 15 AOH. All participants answered a questionnaire about their profile, place and time of work, use of personal protective equipment and knowledge about NIHL, after that they were sent to Speech Therapy and Audiology Clinic of São Lucas University (Porto Velho-RO) for additional anamnesis, otoscopy, audiometry and tympanometry. Data were tabulated and analyzed statistically (Chi-square, T Student, Fisher e Kruskal Wallis; p<0,05). Results: All subjects had a tritonal average within normal limits, however, 66.7% of AOH and 30.6% of Ds got degradation in some isolated frequencies. AOHs got higher rates of hearing loss in isolated frequencies with statistically significant difference. Only 52.8% of the Ds and 26.7% of the AOH were able to say what NIHL is. Despite knowing the protective methods, Ds and AOH did not wear protective hearing. Conclusion: After evaluation of the auditory system it was found that Ds had hearing loss suggestive of NIHL in 22.2% of cases, and the AOH, 20.0%. Ds and AOH do not use protective methods against noise and ignore the effects of NIHL in the body.
