RESUMO

A view of this work goes around the dialogue set between tradition and modernity which provokes resistance and charming in several segments of the population in the city of Recife from 1880 to 1914. At that time, when the modernity was just a glimmer, in order to establish itself the new has a meeting with the tradition as a starting point and sometimes it makes some changes so that it fits the standing needs, on the other hand the old in counterpoint to the new ratifies the rupture with the time already lived. The analysis of the dialogue established between tradition and modernity, is the aim of this research whose main subject is the modernization, with urbanization, people moving around among goods and services, humour, advertisements as means of criticism, expression and diffusion of modernization of the city of Recife. The achieved aim is a writing about the life in the city, its changes with the techinical apparatus, the answers given by the people to those changes since the creation of drawings and work of artists, humorists and photographers
