RESUMO

In this dissertation the collective research "The Authoritarian Personality", in which Theodor W. Adorno has participated, and the movie "Arnerican Beauty", written by Alan Ball and directed by Sam Mendes, have been brought into focus. The aim was to pursue the movements of looking in the sociological work and in the audiovisual product as well, considering the historical primacy ofvisual to the act ofknowing in western culture. Trying to put in relief the aesthetics experience of thinking during the writing, excluded from the positivist sociological tradition, the intent was to follow the register of looking that, manifested in others movies produced in the USA, moved basically among kinds of diagnosis, victory possibilities or impossibilities and arrangement of the american way of life. Finally, the expectation was to drive the attention to the larger :trame of the epistemological dispositions of Critica! Theory and its particularities in the social thinking field
