RESUMO

The following work presents an ethnography of the Praça do Mercado (Market Square) of Campos dos Goytacazes/RJ. Based upon direct observation and research on local newspaper and magazines, it aims to elucidate the paradox of its endurance as a traditional place for providing first class products in an urban center in which the modernization process has brought different commercial behaviors and turned its presence quite obsolete. Firstly, it brings on its genesis, during the 1920 s decade, when hygienic reforms were taking place in the city, and then its role as a public institution, either in its morphologic and dynamic aspects. Due to its multiple activities, with different rhythms and peculiar ways of commercial interchange, the Market still holds social forms that, beyond its ordinary commercial functions, preserve its as a public space in its full meaning. Thus, it is possible to recognize certain virtual identities that help to understand its persistent attractiveness which, independently of social status, education and other factors, is exercised upon the local population and is ultimately responsible for its capacity to resist any attempts of removability.
