RESUMO

There is a consensus in literature regarding the benefits that organizations can obtain for their business by making use of information systems (IS) and information technology (IT). These include, better products and services, greater client satisfaction and competitive edge. Aiming to maximize the potential of information systems, several information system planning methodologies have been developed during the last decades which attempt to align the information system use strategy to business strategy. Due to the fact that the supply of IS/IT solutions requires sponsorship and commitment of the entire organization, literature has announced that just one formal planning process and its maturity is insufficient for the IS/IT department of an organization to perform its role efficiently, so that it contributes to the achievement of an organizationâs business aims. Therefore, attention is turned towards the IS/IT function aims and the other business functions. Within this framework, this paper proposes a model that represents the possible situations in which the relations of the IS/IT functions are found, together with the other business functions and also suggests a procedure based on data which shows the views and interaction of the IS/IT function through organization management and its users, obtained through a questionnaire. This procedure is used to identify at which level the IS/IT function relates to the business according to the proposed model. This paper also offers suggestions for improvement of the relation aspects which were diagnosed as unsatisfactory. To illustrate the application of the suggested procedure, according to the proposed model, study cases were carried out in four (04) companies of Greater Recife chosen according to the researcherâs convenience
