RESUMO

Following the contemporary reflections in social theory concerning the ânational 6 questionâ, the aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the value of the idea of nation in 7 modern society and the way in which the notion of race assumed importance in the 8 questions related to nationality formation in the late 19th Century âmodernityâ. In that 9 sense, conceptions relative to the ideas of ânationâ and âraceâ in classical (Max Weber 10 and Marcel Mauss) and contemporary (Norbert Elias, Ernest Gellner, Benedict Anderson 11 e Anthony Smith) social theory were revisited, being articulated according to one of those 12 given interpretations. Consequently, this study considers ânationâ, following Anthony 13 Smithâs theory, to be a âmythic-symbolicâ concept of relative importance nowadays, and 14 âraceâ to be one of its essential constitutive symbols, playing a central, foundational part 15 in its understanding. The discussion dedicates special attention to the interplays between 16 those elements in the Brazilian scenario; thus, it is located in the historical period that 17 goes from the late 19th Century to the beginning of the 20th Century, a time of 18 âepistemologisationâ of the ideas of âraceâ and ânationâ, and analyses the main socio19 historical essays produced by Brazilian interpreters whose aims included the analysis of 20 âraceâ and ânationalityâ; they are Silvio Romero (1851-1914) and his âHistory of 21 Brazilian Literatureâ (2001 [1888]), Euclides da Cunha (1866-1909) and the classic âThe 22 Backlandsâ (2001 [1902]), Raimundo Nina Rodrigues (1862-1906) and his âthesis of 23 racial degenerationâ, Manoel Bomfim (1868-1932), through his still fresh âLatin America 24 â problems of originâ (1993 [1905]) and his thesis of âparasitismâ, Oliveira Vianna 25 (1883-1951) and his âAryanism thesisâ, and, finally, Paulo Prado (1869-1943), in his brief 26 but engaging âPortrait of Brazilâ (1997 [1928])
