RESUMO

In the last decades, there has been a growing utilization of planning as a tool of public policy to prevent and administer the conflicts associated with mining. From the basic concepts of mining, and planning, the author evaluates national and foreign experiences with respect to the inclusion of mining in municipal planning and putlines a case study from the municipality of Itu (S. Paulo State). It is emphasired that the political component of planning as a necessary condition for its eficiency and implementation should be takem into account. The technical characteristics of the geological work needed to suplement official, municipal plans are also presented. The author concludes that the perspective of reducing conflicts associated with mining is limited and depends on the political organization of society. The need to research and experiment new tools and planning models is also stressed
