The present dissertation deals with the sustainable development issue in the artisanal mining activity and objectives to evaluate the application of sustainable development concepts into this activity. Artisanal mining is characterized by individual work, or in cooperatives, which uses manual hand made and rudimentary, simple and mobile equipment to mine precious and semiprecious stones, metallic and non-metallic minerals in alluvial deposits, in river sediments and terraces, as well as in secondary deposits and top of mountains. Although illegal, from the technical point of view, the garimpo of Engenho Podre represents an important role as source of job, increase of income and social contribution to Monsenhor Horta district. This study allows concluding that a good management system, together an improvement of environmental and technical conditions of the garimpo it is possible to conciliate sustainable development concept and artisanal mining activity.
