RESUMO

This work had as general objective to know aspects of the bioecology of Melipona asilvai stingless bee, seeking to supply subsidies for preservation programs and the sustained use of its colonies for rural communities in the semi-arid areas of Bahia State. They were studied characteristics related with the nesting habit and the nest architecture, flight activity and physical-chemistries characteristics of honey samples. The study was accomplished during the period of February of 2002 to March of 2003, in the municipal districts of Tucano, Itaberaba and Santa Terezinha, Bahia State. The colonies of M. asilvai were found nesting in five vegetable species (Myracrodruon urundeuva, Spondias tuberosa, Prosopis juliflora, Sideroxylon obtusifolium and Amburana cearensis), being A. cearensis used by 37,5% of the found colonies. The architecture of the nest of this species followed the pattern observed in another species of the gender. The species showed adaptation to the box model Fernando Oliveira-INPA, could be recommended for its rational creation. For the local conditions of the study, the ideal volume recommended for the brood area should not surpass a liter (10 x 10 x 10 cm). In the dry months this species presented the habit of collect feces of animals in substitution to the mud, being recommended the installation of creations areas of this species distant of creations of animals, as well as the supply of humid mud to the bees in dry times. With relationship to its flight activity, the interaction of climatic factors and the readiness of resources in the ambient were decisive, being the temperature the main factor. The largest flow of bees was verified in the interval of 10:00 at the 15:00 hours, with pick of 13:00 at the 14:00 hours to the temperature of 27,4C and relative humidity of the air of 60,6%. The honey presented medium values of humidity of 29,491,46%, being recommended larger cares with the hygiene and the storage of the product, being avoided the occurrence of fermentative processes. The other physical-chemical parameters analyzed presented medium values adapted to the direct human consumption.
