RESUMO

Weco magazine: the contribution about building a Brazilian popular music idea in the 20`s last years and the 30`s first years. The Brazilian musical manifestation`s research has been presenting frequently as a controversy about accept the expression popular music. When historians choose the term popular music, they could understand it as an homogeneous cultural manifestation produced by a specific social group. It should be a risk calling popular music every different cultural manifestations across the historical times. This work purposes to understand the expression popular music and recognize how one of those meaning processes. It has been done through a music magazine published between 1928 and 1931 - the Weco magazine. This magazine was a locus when Musicians and theories talked about music and the Brazilian music situation. They worked against different musical manifestations and selected which one could be Called popular music in that time. An analysis on that projects which informs the meaning of the popular music expression has been intended a discussion about the relevance of this expression as a history concept for the music research.
