RESUMO

This thesis is a narrative of a series of events in the Bahian teaching history. It describes the span of six years (1982-1987) when Introduction to African Studies class was introduced in the regular studies of public State schools, by then a set of actions on learning programs took place in that Brazilian State in order to provide teachers and Black Movements activists with basic guidelines on the issue. Looking back at the Black Movements past we can tell how these actions were anticipated by their local and national organizations such as Black Press, Brazilian Black Front, Afro-Brazilian Cultural Center and Afro-Oriental Studies Center at Federal University of Bahia. By analyzing the Black movements fights for education and comprehend claimings for inclusion of studies on Africa, Africans, and Afro-Brazilians in the Brazilian education system as an anti-racist strategy, we got evidences on how hard was made the racial discrimination redressing point. During this process, a bunch of articulations between government and Black Movements activists, and among themselves as well, contributed to design an educational model, in which the African civilizational roots played a key role. Even though the Introduction to African Studies class in Bahian State schools had become a public policy in 1985, conflicts and contradictions interrupted the implementation of that policy in 1987 when the head of Education Department was replaced. Besides the lack of political interest on behalf of government and mainstream institutions, there was a systematic denial of existence of racism and, consequently, a disinterest on policies oriented to redress racial discrimination consequences, that is why such initiative was deemed as awkward by the State administration, which in turn was looking forward to democratizing teaching and giving education for all. Some of the aforementioned factors gave a contribution to interrupt the teaching of Introduction of African Studies class in Bahian schools of 80s, and the learning programs for teachers as well. From the oral rapports given by the players who went through that experience and from the data records found we build this narrative and made comparisons among the conflicts faced by then and the enforcement of 10.639/03 act nowadays.
