RESUMO

Adjuvant chemotherapy prolongs disease-free survival and overall survival in women with node-positive breast cancer, specially those in the premenopause. Adjuvant chemothewrapy is expected to have a significant impact on the natural history of patients with node-negative breast cancer. With the purpose of evaluating the impact of adjuvant chemotherapy in the evolution of node-negative breast cancer stage I and II, we analysed the medical record of 334 patients with disease T1No and T2No treated or non treated with systemic adjuvant chemotherapy, from february 1980 to december 1988, with follow up until december 1993. The results showed that this procedure didn t increase significantly the disease-free survival and overall survival in all patients. However, we can state that chemotherapy adjuvant was beneficial in patients who were in premenopause, with tumors stage II-T2No, histological grade III, nuclear grade I and without estrogen nuclear receptor. The use of adjuvant chemotherapy for patients with histologically negative axillmy lymph nodes stage I and II shouldn t be indiscriminately recommended, being indicated only when the analysis presents the categories of the prognostic factors above related
