RESUMO

The teaching of portuguese as a second language, epecifically the nominal number and gender of the Portuguese for the indigenous people of the waimiri atroari is the focus of this theses. It accomplishes a contrastive analysis of gender and nominal number in both languages, explaning the structural distinctions between them. It also presents the methods of second language teaching used in the last sixtynyears. And from a school etnogrphy, taking into account the cultural aspects of the people for the choice of the task-based language teaching as the most appropriate for this teaching context.
