RESUMO

We present two novel techniques for optical devices: the first one is for Polarization Dependent Transmission (PDT) measurements in passive or active optical components. The second is a new method for the detection of Spectral Hole Burning (SHB). Both techniques are demonstrated in Erbium Doped Fibers Amplifiers (EDFAs). Using or PDT technique we studied the polarization dependent gain (PDG) in home-made and commercial EDFAs. Compared with other conventional techniques, our method is simpler, versatile, and unique in presenting transient PDG responses. From the transient PDG response of the EDFA we obtain the necessary parameters for PDG characterization. The second technique for EDFAs characterization developed in this thesis allows for studies of spectral hole burning (SHB) and is based on Amplified Spectrum Emissions (ASE). Our technique, compared with other conventional techniques, is extremely simpler and faster, and gives highly reproducible, consistent results
