RESUMO

This thesis deals with the study and implementation of optimized erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA), including the operation in the saturation regime. The main goal was the design and implementation of a booster amplifier. An improvementin the analytical modeling was introduced, aiming its application in high power EDFA. Both single and two-stage amplifier configurations were investigated and compared. In particular, a combination of a modest pump power and large input signal power, in a two-stage doped fiber configuration, was optimized to maximize the signal output power. The saturation signal output power was taken as the figure of merit to be optimized in the amplifier designo A high Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) compression was measured when the combination of high signal input power/modest pump power was used in the implemented EDFA configuration
