RESUMO

Whereas the competitive strategies of organizations do not cover all possibilities of seeking competitiveness, this study aimed at verifying how the sources of Competitive Advantage and Strategic Practices impact on the performance of software companies in Fortaleza. From a theoretical perspective, this study expects to contribute with the strategic literature, showing that software producing organizations, in the pursuit of competitiveness, are not intended merely as a representative theory of competitive advantage. The multi-method research was chosen on account of the nature of this study because it involves the use of both, qualitative and quantitative techniques. The qualitative phase had as an objective to explore the variables involved in the research and to support the quantitative phase, which was characterized by a survey carried out by the application of 110 questionnaires, of which 74 were validated for analysis. Data from businessmen and executives based in Fortaleza were subjected to descriptive and multivariate analysis, which in this research include the factor analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression. The survey results pointed at the non-alignment of business and industry executives to only one theory of competitive advantage in relation to the Sources of Competitive Advantage and Strategic Practices used. As to the relationship between strategic practices and performance, the result of multiple regression analysis was not conclusive. Although the test results show that specific practices impact on the three presented performance indicators, the statistics indexes dismissed the generalization of the findings, since they were not able to explain the phenomenon. Aiming at the continuity of this type of research, which suggests better accuracy on performance dimension, the model should be applied generally, without a specific sector to be studied, as well as other relevant economic sectors in the State, such as the creative industry, in which the software industry is inserted.
