RESUMO

Study of the Clientele of a Mental Health Attention Programme with University Students from São Carlos. The purpose of this study is to characterize the university students from São Carlos, who have used the Educational Mental Health Service over a four year period (1990-1993). Their major problems and symptoms related to mental health and their initiative in seeking help have been checked through their health records. This study also intends to give a contribution to occupational therapy literature and pratice in terms of the development of mental health prevention, promotion programmes and actions in order to extend the occupational therapist s role further than the traditional rehabilitation role. The methodological procedures used were: a) data collection of health records of the 66 clients assisted at the Service, through the technique of "the depth interview" with further counselling on activity planning and re-organization; b) data analysis according to the principies of descriptive epidemiology, once the clinic and epidemiology interact methodologically. Data from the clients health records has been selected and classified in eleven categories that made up the socio demographic profile of the students and it will also guide the planning of other mental health attention services for the same population. Data analysis allowed us to identify a majority of female clients in a group where male students are predominant, most of them being between 19 and 22 years old and almost all single. Housing conditions, geographical origin and the first three semesters in college were the factors detected as being the cause of emotional and psychological fragility with the breaking out of a crisis situation. In the studied cases these crises reflected a predominance of anxiety disorders, situational and/or reactive depression and adjustment reactions, psychotic episodes being rare. The low number of sessions and the types of discharge characterized the clinical time alloted to each client, and have been considered sufficient in relation to the purposes of the Service, which is mental health education through counselling and orientation
