RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate teleradiographs taken from one individual using a conventional technique and a modified technique, when the patient s head is in Natural Position (NP) aiming a comparison of the true variation of these two techniques, trying to correlate the sella-nasion/vertical (SNN) plane with postural/facial profile and antero-posterior measurements. The sample consisted of fifty Caucasians aging twenty-one years. Variables consisted of type and techniques of extra-oral radiographs. The cephalometric measurements were divided into three groups; a) postural measurements (4), b) profile measurements (3), and c) antero-posterior measurements (9). No statistically significant differences were found for females, while males showed statistically significant differences for sella-nasion (SN), Frankfurt, and mandibular planes in relation to true (T) vertical. For antero-posterior and facial profile measurements no statistically significant differences were found in either groups. A correlation of the SNN plane with the palatal and Frankfurt a plane was found for both conventional and NP techniques, except when lateral conventional teleradiographs were taken from males. No correlation was found between the SNN base of the skull plane and the mandibular plane in either position
