RESUMO
The contemporary western societies have developed a movement known as New Age, in which values, ancient religious practices and oriental creeds are brought back, combined with a rising concern about nature as a sacred space. The challenge to reach the environment sustainability and the search for a kind of life with spiritual broadening get mixed up and provoke human move-outs in several parts of the world, thus being deemed important centers on the planet by those adept at this so-called esoteric movement. This work was carried out on this perspective, having the city Alto ParaÃso de GoiÃs as one of the scenarios for the analysis of a situation in which the protection of the environment is based on religious spiritual practices and perception of the environment as a means of relations between the man and the sacred. Its geographical features, as well as migration flows and tourists the city has welcomed in the last decade, permeated the formation of its multiple identities, resulting in a space where the symbols the nature offers are seen by the inhabitants not only as opportunities for economic development, but also as limits for the human activity on the environment
