RESUMO

This work researches and examines the spirituality of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous from the perspective of the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. It traces the history of Alcoholics Anonymous with special emphasis on the Twelve Steps, and their origins. It seeks to understand the binomial spirituality and recovery, which presents a highly original understanding of the union between medicine and religion as an alternative for the treatment of alcoholism. Through the course of its development the work presents a revision of the model of conceiving alcoholism of Alcoholics Anonymous and accents the spiritual element that permeates the experience and the praxis of the Brotherhood. Seeking to clarify the internal dynamics of the program, this research reconstructs elements that remain implicit, or little ecognized, in the discourse of the Brotherhood.(AU)
