RESUMO

This text aims to identify the degree of interference in the process of teaching in the onstruction of the cultured norm of Brazilian Portuguese considering, on the one hand, the role of school as a conductor of linguistic standardization and, on the other, the number of individuals that have had access to public instruction in the second half of the 19th century in Bahia. At that time Bahian society experienced deep political and social transformations, such as the end of the slavery system and the establishment of the republican regime. The theoretical approach of Sociolinguistics takes into account the level of instruction as a crucial social factor in the shaping of the norms of a given language, and the studies directed toward the linguistic social history of Brazilian Portuguese have emphasized the necessity to reconstruct the history of teaching in Brazil considering how this process contributed to the constitution of the cultured norm. The data displayed in this work was taken from official and unofficial documents, identifying the taught contents and the methods used in the education of the Portuguese language, as well as information related to the school population and the system of education. Although the didactic materials and the methods of education concerning the Portuguese language have improved significantly and the government has intensified investments in the field of public instruction, it can be observed that in the structure of schools, the flow of teachers and the level of attendance of the students, that it is not possible to assure that in the period in focus, the linguistic standard has been fully acquired for this population.
