RESUMO

In this work, we studied the electrochemical and electrochromic properties of cobalt oxihydroxide thin film. The films were electrochemically deposited onto glass covered with transparent/conducting SnO2 films, from a Co(II) solution. The film stoichiometry and composition was analyzed by Electronic Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA), termogravimetry (TGA) and by electrogravimetry, using an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance. The electrochemical and electrochromic behavior in basic electrolytes was studied by cyclic voltammetry, chronopotenciometry, chronoamperometry, spectroelectrochemistry and electrogravimetry. The as-grown film was identified as a CoO2,64H2,27 .0.4 H2O compound. The electrochemical and electrogravimetric analysis clearly indicated cation participation on the oxidation/reduction behavior of the films, and as a consequence a new reaction mechanism is proposed in this work. The electrochromic efficiency was 20 cm/C, and durability was higher than 10 coloring/bleaching cycles, showing that this material has a performance comparable with other anodic coloring compounds.
