RESUMO

Genetic and ambient influences affect the Central Nervous System (CNS) during the whole development process. An adequate nutrition is essential for the formation of the CNS, its functional organization and the development of the organism. Many researches using half-synthetic diets had been developed in laboratory animals to reproduce pathological, biochemical and clinical characteristics, observed in unfed human beings. The regional basic diet (RBD), an experimental diet, was proposed to study the characteristic malnutrition of the low income inhabitants of the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco. The present study evaluated, by means of the histology and digital analysis of image, the morphologic profile of the posterior cortex of Wistar rats submitted to two nutritional treatments: commercial laboratory diet (LabinaÂ, 23% of protein) and low-proteic diet (DBR, 8% of protein), originating 6 experimental groups: N5, N7 and N9 - animals nourished with Labina during 5, 7 and 9 months respectively, and D5, D7 and D9 - mal nourished animals by DBR during the same periods. After the nutritional treatment, the animals had been sacrificed and the brains removed, processed histologically and evaluated through morphometrics study. The induced malnutrition for DBR caused a significant reduction in the corporal mass of the animals. The analysis of the average values related to the encephalic weight during 5Â, 7 and 9 month of postnatal life demonstrated that there was significant difference, which was lower than the malnurished animals difference. It did not have significant difference in relation to the number of neurons for field and nor in relation to the average area of the neurons soma. Such findings indicated that the induced malnutrition by the DBR in after-weans has repercussions on the ponderal and encephalic evolution even it does not cause alterations in the citomorfologic of the cerebral cortex
