Conhecimento e crenças sobre as vitaminas e o consumo de produtos vitaminicos

During the 1990 s, the vitamins constitutes a focal point in nutrition and health research. Important research data have been published on the relation between this nutrients and the risk of chronic diseases; the complexity of the issue has delayed the conclusions. The public interest in the issue is reflected in its coverage by the media: the vitamins are in the media and in debates, as well as in the vitamin supplements advertisings. At the same time, it is easy to observe the increasing avaiability of these products in drugstores and supermarkets. Although the commercialization of such products is considered expanding, the consumption prevalence in Brazil is still almost unknown. The general aims of this study were to investigate the practices of vitamin supplements consumption and the vitamin beliefs associated with this praetice. A survey was conducted in a sample of students entering a private university in city of São Paulo. Questions about the sources for nutrition and health information were included. Statements on the relation between vitamins and health were employed to access their vitamin beliefs; respondents answers were graded by means of a 5 point agreement scale. The overall score for the statements represents a vitamin beliefs measure. A total of 894 questionnaries was completed; the SPSS and the SAS were used to analyse the data. The consumption prevalence of vitamin supplements was 30,4%, in the 3 months preceding the survey; 23,1% of the students were regular consumers and 6,0 % used the products sporadically. Vitamin C e multivitamin supplements were the most consumed products. There were not statistically significant differences between gender, age, work and tabagism in the consumption prevalence. There was a higher proportion of regular supplementers among the students of Humanities (p<0,05) and among the group that practice physical exercises frequently (p<0,001). "To maintain health" and "to correet dietary deficiencies" were the most important reasons for taking vitamin supplements.
