RESUMO

This work approaches existent socio environmental conflicts in the area of permanent preservation in the margins of the Formosa Lake, placed in the Protected Area of Lagoa Formosa, in the rural zone of the municipal district of Planaltina â GO (state of GoiÃs, Brazil), 65 km distant from BrasÃlia and 7 km from Planaltina city. The Lake serves to the drinkwater provisioning of the urban population and, due to a lack of a land use plan for the municipality as a whole, its integrity is threatened by the growing pressure of the anthropic occupation of its margins. In disrespect for legislation, ranches, small farms, tourism complexes and residential lots contaminate the waters, not only with pesticides flowing from a intensive agricultural activity, mainly mechanized monoculture of beans and soybean, but also by soil infiltration and overflow of sewage stored in inadequately built residential septic tanks. The socio-environmental conflicts in the area were initially identified by interpretation of LandSat images, complemented by field observation. Their causes were searched in the history â last and recent â of the occupation of the Lake surroundings, on the basis of documents analysis and interviews with some local personalities. To characterize the conflicts and their actors, as well as to collect suggestions for their solution, a questionnaire was applied to a significant sample of inhabitants of the area. The detected origin of the conflicts were: a) lack of knowledge of the environmental legislation, by 96% of the interviewers, and of the limits of the area of permanent preservation around the Lake Formosa, by 90% of them; b) lack of fiscalization by the responsible authorities; and c) lack of social participation in the governmental decisions referring the conservation of natural resources
