RESUMO

The aim of this research was to compare the effectiveness (through observation of hyphae and/or pseudohyphae) of two cytological methods in the diagnosis of oral candidosis: the Liquid Based-Exfoliative Cytology (CEBL) and the Conventional Exfoliative Cytology (CEC). The sample consisted of 60 participants with average age of 65,98 years, which was divided in two groups of 30. The experimental group consisted of participants with clinical signs of oral candidosis and the control group of healthy individuals. Besides evaluating the effectiveness of both methods in the diagnosis of oral candidosis and after the considered treatment, it was compared the degree of patient discomfort; the quality of the microscopical images and the association between hyphae and/or pseudohyphae and the oral epithelial cell type more observed. After the considered treatment, the experimental group was reexamined and the two cytological methods repeated. The data collected were submitted to statistical analysis, with the use of the chi-square method. The results demonstrated that CEBL was better than CEC due the major number of glass slides containing hyphae and/or pseudohyphae and because the quantity and dispersion more uniform of epithelial cells, what characterize the superior quality of images in that method. The evaluation of the glass slides disclosed that hyphae and/or pseudohyphae were more associated with epithelial cells of the intermediary and superficial layers in both methods. The degree of patient discomfort and the evidence of the effectiveness in the considered treatment had not disclosed significant statistical differences between the two methods tested. Because of the favorable findings revealed in this study, we propose that the CEBL be added to the list of instruments available for use in the diagnosis of oral candidosis
