RESUMO

The European Union is the main destination for Brazilian Northeast exports. Nevertheless, opportunities for increasing trade relations between these regions seem to be higher, which encourages further study on the sectors characterized by underperformance if compared to what should actually be. This is the main objective of this work; to suggest opportunities for northeastern products in the European Union, and to indicate the possible exportation additions for each northeastern state and for each sector classified by MERCOSUL Common Nomenclature. The analysis was based on the Complementarity Index, and on the Effectiveness of Trade rate, with data for the year 2006. The first rate indicates the sectors with the greatest potential for exportation for each northeastern state to the European Union, and the second rate indicates if the potential of such sectors is being used. Further analysis was done, as the one which indicates the revealed comparative advantage of sectors between the years 2002 and 2006, as well as the profile of exports from the Brazilian Northeast to the European Union at that time. The results show the underperformance of many sectors in each state and also indicate high levels of potentiality, which suggests the need for sector reform policies
