RESUMO

A red sponge collected on the Ribeira beach in Ubatuba, São Paulo, was classified as Tedania ignis (Duchaissaing and Michelotti) Verrill.; by Professor Sara of Gênova University, Gênova, Italy. This sponge was extracted with various organic solvents. The fractions containning sterols were then studied by gas chromatography (Finnigan 9.500) coupled with mass spectrometry (Finnigan 1015 S/L) coupled with a computor (Finnigan 6100). On this basis, it was possible to identify the following sterols in the mixture: desmosterol; cholesterol (the most abundant component); brassicasterol; 22,23-dihydrobrassicasterol; stigmasterol or poriferasterol and b-sitosterol. A mass spectra study of six cholesterol derivatives with substitution in the A ring was also undertaken. The effect of substitution on the fragmentation pattern is discussed. In several cases, the fragmentation was also studied by MIKES (Mass Analyzed Ion Kinetic Energy Spectra).
