RESUMO

Xanthomonas campestris pv. begoniae (Xab) is the causal agent of bacterial leaf spot and blight of begonias. The variability of Brazilian strains of Xab is not known. Neither is known about the effectiveness of pesticides to control bacterial leaf spot and blight of begonias. This study aimed to characterize biochemical and biologically twenty Xab isolates collected in begonia producing regions in the state of São Paulo to verify their variability in relation to geographical origin and to evaluate the efficiency of pesticides on disease control. The results of biochemical and biological analysis clustered isolates into five groups, which had no relation to their geographical origin. Regarding the efficiency of pesticides, all products tested had an effect in controlling the disease with different levels of efficiency. Oxitetracycline+streptomycin and oxitetracycline+cupric sulfate showed the best disease control. Copper oxychloride, cupric hydroxide, and cuprous oxide had intermediary control, and kasugamycin was less effective to control the disease. The products based on benzalkonium chloride and copper sulfate were phytotoxic to begonias. The lower disease severity was always proportional to the increase of products concentrations.
