RESUMO

The Marituba aquifer belongs to the Barreiras / Marituba system and is located inside of Alagoas Sedimentary Basin, in Alagoasâ coastal region. Since the 1970âs, aquifers play an important role in urban and industrial water supply to the city of MaceiÃ, involving mainly wells from the Bebedouro and MutangeÂs group. MaceiÃÂs demand for water has been increasing, especially during the last decades, stimulated by population growth. As a result, water exploitation from the Marituba aquifer has increased substantially. The impact of this increase in exploitation was observed by MutangeÂs wells in 1990Âs, when significant changes in water quality were noticed. Historical records of the chemical analyses of produced water showed a continuous and gradual concentration rise in the chloride, calcium, magnesium and sulphate ions, demonstrating a development towards seawater ionic composition. Hydrodynamic studies showed water drainage from the Barreiras aquifer to the Marituba aquifer, as well as, small cyclical variations of hydraulic head associate with tide variations. The transmissivity of the Marituba aquifer in the area of study is between 3.3 x 10-4 m2/s and 1.1 x 10-3 m2/s. It has been observed that when transmissivity is lower, the water is more saline
