RESUMO

An experimental study of the propagation characteristics of a graded-index multimode fiber was performed. The study include measurements of the intermodal dispersion of the fiber, which showed a dependence on the conditions of launching and collecting of the modes. Measurements of the angular distribution of light in the far-field of the fiber were also realized, which showed a dependence on intensity distribution between various modes. Both the measurements, indicate if the profile of the graded-index fiber is optimum, but not indicating the region where it deviates from its optimum value. Therefore, we made measurements of the differential mode delay which indicate exactly the region where the profile deviates from its optimum value. The information obtained is very important as it could be used directly for increasing the bandwidth of the subsequently pulled fibers. Such measurements showed great sensitivity to small changes in the profile. For the first timer by using a single-mode fiber, we selected a few guided modes in the graded-index fiber, launching a few modes at the input end or selecting a few modes at the output end. The results of this study can be directly used to improve the bandwidth of graded-index multimode fibers, being produced in Brazil
