RESUMO

We have studied the propagation of the fundamental mode LP01 and a few higher order modes, LP11, LP21, in optical fibers. This was done by operating at a slightly smaller wavelength than the cut-off wavelength for single-mode operation. The temporal separation of the modes is compared theoretically and experimentally. The propagation in two fibers coupled together is studied for the first time. We also studied how the intermodal dispersion, in graded-index multimode fibers, varies with the launching conditions. These were varied used lenses or a step-index fiber having a core and numerical aperture larger than that of the test fiber. These measurements are correlated with the fiber output angle. Propagation in fibres coupled together is also investigated
